Wikang Filipino

There were times in our history when Wikang Filipino was suppressed—forbidden to flourish by conquerors and imperialists. Many times we were not allowed to speak nor read in this native language. But our brave ancestors fought for the freedom to use our own language because language itself represents our culture and identity as a nation. Having our own language, our own literature and means of communication, would mean we were intelligent beings who had inalienable rights to be free from coercion or abusive authority.

And this is the importance of preserving our language. With the fast paced society, with new social media, we are at the brink of losing grasp of our own language. Nowadays the internet is the main source of information. And so we must use the internet, not just for playing or socializing, but also in helping preserve Wikang Filipino.

There were many brave men in our history that fought for freedom not just through violent means but also through language. This shows that language is more than just a means to communicate; it is also a tool for change. Language can make people rethink things and reassess what they believe in and what they are willing to fight for. Words can be very influential, at times even more powerful than guns or any other weapon.

Our history shows how the Propagandists used words and literature against the guns and cannons of the conquerors. You can do the same. We can all change things through words and through language. Learning more about our language can help us appreciate our freedom more and our sovereignty as a nation.
